“Broken Heart University” is a musical collective formed in 2018 by Tony Batty. After a 40 year hiatus, Batty decided to return to songwriting upon being introduced to award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter Ashley Fayth.
Batty and Fayth worked together to compose and arrange a quirky10-track album of blues, americana, country, and roots inspired by Batty’s travels around the USA.
“Growing up in early 60s, I looked to the best of American music for inspiration when sometimes homegrown versions seemed like pale imitations. From rock’n’roll to west coast sound to folk and blues it was always the Americans who intrigued me,” he admits.
Batty visited America for the first time in his 30s, and found himself on a musical journey that informed and inspired his own writing. From Nashville to Memphis to New Orleans, his love of Americana was firmly rooted in the styles of the southern and border states.
Broken Heart University’s debut album is a culmination of these influences – from the southern soul inspired “Wave Your Wallet” to the smoky blues of “Counting House” to the rollicking country of “Nancy J” – the record is a musical roadmap of his American experience.
Despite looking stateside for musical inspiration, Batty is a die-hard Everton FC and Lancashire CCC supporter.
The new album is available for purchase from all major online music retailers from 1 September.
